8 Tom SawyerTom liked walking around the village. One evening, he noticed a big boy in front of him. This boy was a stranger, and Tom was surprised because he didn%u2019t see new people very often. The boy had nice, expensive clothes.%u201cHe%u2019s got shoes, a new shirt, and a tie,%u201d Tom thought. %u201cAnd it%u2019s not Sunday. My clothes are old and ugly.%u201dTom looked at the boy, and the boy looked back at him. Tom didn%u2019t like him. Finally, Tom said, %u201cI can beat you!%u201d%u201cWhy don%u2019t you try?%u201d replied the boy.%u201cWell, I can,%u201d said Tom.%u201cNo, you can%u2019t.%u201d%u201cYes, I can.%u201dThere was silence.%u201cYou%u2019re afraid,%u201d said the boy.%u201cI%u2019m not afraid,%u201d Tom replied.%u201cYes, you are.%u201d%u201cNo, I%u2019m not!%u201dThen Tom pushed the boy, and the boy pushed him back. Soon, they were on the ground. Tom pulled the boy%u2019s hair and hit him hard. They fought fiercely, but eventually, the bigger boy began to cry.%u201cStop! Stop!%u201d he said. %u201cNow, that will teach you something,%u201d Tom said. Tom got home late. His clothes were dirty and torn. When Aunt Polly saw his clothes, she thought, %u201cWhat can I do with this boy? Well, tomorrow is Saturday, and he must work.%u201dIt was summer. Saturday morning was sunny. Tom was in the garden with a brush and a big pot of white paint in his hand. He looked at the fence. It was three metres high and thirty metres long. %u201cI am very unhappy. It%u2019s Saturday, and I have to paint this huge fence.
